Understanding Zakat & Sadaqah
A clear scholarly distinction between obligatory annual dues and voluntary charitable giving.
What is Zakat?
Zakat is an obligatory 2.5% annual contribution levied on qualifying wealth (savings, gold, silver, business inventory, and cash) held for one complete lunar year above the Nisab threshold.
Unlike general donations, Zakat distribution is strictly confined by the Holy Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60) to eight designated categories, prioritizing destitute Muslims and poor students of sacred knowledge.
- ✓ Calculated at 2.5% of net qualifying surplus wealth
- ✓ Must result in full transfer of ownership (Tamleek)
- ✓ 100% segregated in our dedicated Zakat account
What is Sadaqah?
Sadaqah encompasses any voluntary charitable act, monetary gift, or ongoing endowment given out of benevolence, love for Allah, and gratitude for His blessings.
There is no Nisab minimum or annual date for Sadaqah. It can be utilized for broad communal benefits such as building water wells, funding madrasa electricity, or medical equipment that continues rewarding the giver eternally (Sadaqah Jariyah).
- ✓ Given at any time in any amount
- ✓ Can be given to non-Muslims and broader civic projects
- ✓ Sadaqah Jariyah yields ongoing continuous reward
